Farmington Hills Texting & Driving Accident Lawyer

Protection from an AV® Rated Car Accident Lawyer in the Detroit Metro Area

While cell phone use during driving is not banned across the state of Michigan, it is illegal to use your hand-held device to read and send texts while driving, according to §257.602.b, the state's anti-texting law. Fines have been put in place to help deter drivers from taking their focus off of the road to text, yet every year there are still millions of collisions. In fact, in 2011 cell phones were the cause of at least 23% of all car accidents in the U.S., creating 1.3 million collisions. Many people, especially teenagers, think that they are somewhat invincible while behind the wheel, yet texting drivers are 23 times more likely to end up in a crash. Out of every form of distracted driving, texting takes the driver's eyes off of the road the longest.

As an AV® rated lawyer by the prestigious Martindale-Hubbell®, our founding attorney, Jon Abrahams, has been deemed a professional car accident attorney who is equally aware of not only achieving beneficial results but doing so in an ethical manner. If you or a loved one has experienced harm from a driver who chose to text behind the wheel, you should pursue legal action. As a victim of personal injury, you have the right to seek out financial recovery to help pay for medical expenses, therapy, any necessary surgeries and any lost income. Additionally, if you have lost someone in a vehicular accident, while our firm cannot remove the emotional pain involved, a Farmington Hills wrongful death attorney can help to obtain restitution for you and your family.

Changes in Michigan State Cell Phone Laws

In March of 2013, the Governor of Michigan placed a new law banning cell phone use entirely for teens on the road. Teenage drivers who are at a level 1 or 2 graduated license cannot use their phones at all while driving. They could be fined up to $100 and potentially have their license suspended if they choose to break this law. The only group that is exempt are those with a level 3 license and 17 years of age or greater. This new legislation has been in the works for quite some time. It will hopefully create safer roadways for the residents of the state.

The reason this ban on teen drivers is so critical is due to national statistics revealing that 82% of 16-17 year olds have cell phones, while 34% of those teens have admitted to texting and driving. Despite the facts that texting is one of the most dangerous and distracting actions to partake in on the road, 55% of teens claimed that it is easy for them to text and drive. This is not true according to data taken showing that most adolescent drivers that text, spend nearly 10% of their driving time outside of their appropriate lane. If you have been injured or lost a loved one due to another's reckless actions, do not wait until it is too late to obtain a knowledgeable personal injury lawyer. Cases involving untimely deaths deserve a wrongful death lawyer that can truly fight for justice.
