Lodge Expressway Shut Down After Multi-Vehicle Accident Results in the Death of a Grand Rapids-Area Man, His Son and His Nephew

In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 18th, 2013, a tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred on Detroit's Lodge expressway. The accident resulted in a 5 – hour closure of that portion of the road due to the death of a 67-year-old Grand Rapids-area man, his 31-year-old son and his 17-year-old nephew.

According to Michigan State Police, a 21-year-old Detroit resident and his passenger were speeding northbound along the Lodge expressway, just north of the Davison freeway, when they collided with another vehicle. The impact of the crash was so violent that it caused the front vehicle to overturn, leaving three of the vehicle's four occupants with fatal injuries and the fourth passenger with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of vehicle that allegedly caused the accident sustained no major injuries himself, however his passenger sustained a few minor injuries, none of them serious. Police believe an excessive rate of speed, alcohol and a failure to wear seat belts may all be contributing factors. The exact cause of the accident is still being investigated.
