MI Wrongful Death - MI State Likely to be Sued After Young Girl's Wrongful Death

Throughout the career of an experienced Detroit personal injury lawyer, it is likely that numerous clients will be represented who have sustained severe personal injury or died as the result of the negligence of others. Examples of cases handled are all tragic, much like the recent incident of a young Michigan girl died when her house caught fire while she was chained to her bed. As a result of her untimely death, her grandmother is now looking to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the state agency’s child protective services division.

Kalamazoo teenager, Calista Springer was sixteen years-old when she died in a fire at her family’s home. When local firefighters investigated the scene, they found the adolescent chained to her bed. Although the fire accident occurred two years ago, last Tuesday jurors found her parents, Anthony and Marsha Springer, guilty of first degree child abused and torture. However, many of the jurors also made comments that negligence on behalf of the Michigan Department of Human Services also played a contributing factor in this wrongful death accident. According to her fraternal grandmother, Suzanne Langdon, despite numerous complaints filed to the Michigan Department of Human Services, nothing was done to remove Springer from her parents home to a safer location. The panel of jurors agreed stating that reports of abuse were inadequately investigated, despite the large amount of complaints filed by family members, neighbors, and school officials.

Although wrongful death charges against the MDHS have yet to be filed, Langdon is hopeful that through her granddaughter’s example, she will be able to create change in the way that child-abuse reports are handled and investigated. “People have asked me over and over why DHS isn’t here (on trial)… DHS dropped the ball so bad, so many times over the years, it’s just disgusting… It’s not about the money. If we don’t get anything else out of a lawsuit, we hope there will be some drastic changes made. It just can’t happen again,” Langdon commented.

Wrongful death accidents, such as the case of Cynthia Springer, are particularly tragic because although people surrounding the teen attempted to take preemptive steps to prevent disaster, their efforts were largely ignored. The results for the family and friends left behind are disastrous, and can leave several unanswered questions. For answers, as well as the best legal advice and legal representation, it is essential to seek assistance from a trustworthy and aggressive Detroit personal injury lawyer immediately. Doing so can help ensure the most successful out come for your wrongful death claim.
