MI Drunk Driving - MI Police Arrest Former MI Politican for DUI

Throughout the career of an experienced Detroit personal injury lawyer, it is common to represent individuals who have sustained severe personal injury or death as the result of a drunk driving accident. Generally, it is politicians who are at the forefront legislation that carries tougher sentences for drunk driving offenders. However, those who make the laws, do not necessarily follow them. This is seen clearly by the February 9th arrest of former Michigan Speaker of the House Craig DeRoche on suspicions of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Witnesses reported to law enforcement officials that a man in a suit was stumbling and falling in the snow outside of an auto shop at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. When Ann Arbor-Saline police officers arrived on the scene, they easily found him. The former speaker was visibly intoxicated–he was unable to walk without assistance, his eyes were bloodshot, and smelled of alcohol. However, DeRoche attempted to avoid police officers by walking away when they tried to approach him. A breathalyzer test showed that DeRoche’s blood alcohol content level was a 0.249, which is more than three times the legal limit in the state of Michigan. He was taken to the Saline Police Department and eventually released when he sobered up.

The Novi Republican was a member of the State Legislature from 2003-2009. For two years, he was the speaker of the house, before his term limit was reached and he could no longer run for office. Since leaving politics, he owns an insurance services company. In an interview on February 15th, DeRoche has stated that he intends “to cooperate fully with police and the court.” He also regarded the DUI arrest as “embarrassing,” but still not a “run-of-the-mill drunk driving incident.”
