Michigan State Trooper's Quick Action Saves Life of 10-Year-Old Girl

The fatal multi-vehicle pileup that took place on I-75 on January 31, 2012 claimed the lives of three individuals, two of them children. Thankfully, due to the quick action of a Michigan State Trooper, who was reportedly one of the first emergency personnel on the scene, 10-year-old Hannah Greenwood survived the massive accident that claimed the lives of her 9-year-old sister and 7-year-old brother. The responding State Trooper, Seth Swanson, reported that he arrived at the scene of the accident and was immediately directed, by various motorists who had also been involved in the pileup, to a crumpled up Mazda6. When Swanson arrived at the vehicle, the driver was outside the vehicle, a female passenger was in the front seat and three children were in the back seat.

After attempting to get a pulse on the younger children, Swanson went around to the other side and broke a window to check to see if the older child had a pulse. When he was able to find a pulse, albeit a faint one, he immediately cleared her airway, placed a resuscitation mask over her mouth and nose and proceeded to give her rescue breaths until she was able to take a deep breath, and then continuing breathing on her own. Emergency personnel then transported the girl to a local hospital where she was able to recover from her injuries. The girl's father has also been able to recover from his injuries and has since been released from the hospital, however the girl's mother remains hospitalized in critical condition.
