Williamston Man Sentenced in Fatal Car Accident

A Williamston man was recently sentenced to between 5 years 11 months and 15 years in prison after being convicted of the DUI charge of operating while intoxicated causing death. According to authorities, on March 11th, 2010, 23-year-old Eliyah Coats had been riding his bicycle along Grand River Avenue when he was hit by a vehicle and killed. The driver of the vehicle that caused the fatal accident was 42-year-old Shawn Reeves. Reports show that Reeves had been high on cocaine at the time of the accident, as well as being on probation for an earlier drunk driving incident. In addition to his prison sentence, the court ordered Reeves to pay restitution to Coats' stepmother and her family.

Every year thousands of people die in alcohol and drug-related car accidents. Being involved in a car accident can be an extremely traumatic and painful experience. When someone dies as a result of a car accident, especially when it was a drunk driving accident, the pain is exponentially magnified. This is due, in part, to the fact that these types of accidents are entirely preventable. Had the driver not gotten behind the wheel, no accident would have taken place.
