Wrongful Death - Massive Settlement Against Fitness Center in Wrongful Death Suit

As a Detroit personal injury lawyer, some of the toughest clients to represent are the families of individuals who died as the result of another person’s negligence. Cases are especially tragic when the person who died did so as a result of trying to stay healthy or get fit. Unfortunately, in a recent wrongful death case, the family of a woman settled for $700,000 against a popular fitness center for recommending and distributing unapproved supplements to clients.

In 2004, Pamela Hoppe joined L.A. Fitness Center to lose weight and stay in shape. Shortly after joining, attendants recommended Hoppe take a variety of supplements that were supposedly going to enhance her weight loss program. However, none of the supplements given to her were approved, tested, or regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Over time, Hoppe developed symptoms of severe liver problems inevitably leading to an episode wherein it was necessary for her to be rushed to the local hospital for medical attention. Doctors determined that her liver was failing as a direct result of the supplements she was taking. Although she was placed on a list for a liver transplant, Pamela Hoppe died in late August of 2004 due to liver failure.

The family of Hoppe filed a wrongful death lawsuit against L.A. Fitness for providing and recommending unapproved and untested supplements that resulted in personal injury or death. Although the trial had been set for early March, 2010, the workout facility and the family recently settled for $700,000 in damages. After paying costs and legal fees, the remaining amount of the settlement will be divided equally between Hoppe’s two children.

As seen from the case of Pamela Hoppe, wrongful death accidents are the most tragic cases. Hoppe would not have taken the supplements had the fitness center attendants not provided and recommend them. Clearly, experiencing a wrongful death in your family is heartbreaking and can leave several questions. For answers, along with the best legal advice and legal representation, it is essential to contact a hard-working Detroit personal injury attorney immediately.
