Dangerous Farmington Hills Roadways

Common Causes of Car Accidents in Farmington Hills

Most car accidents can be attributed to driver error or human behavior; however, that is not always the case. In fact, some of the deadliest car accidents are not caused by drivers at all, but rather by the road itself. Dangerous roads can mean anything from potholes causing a car to go into another lane, to poorly designed roads limiting visibility and control, to inadequate road signs, to not enough shoulders, too narrow of lanes.

The most common examples of dangerous roads stem from the following:

  • Defective Design: This is the simplest of causes for dangerous roads; it includes the failure to ensure the road is designed safely. This might mean that curves were made too sharp, that the road design did not account of drop-offs, or even on-ramps to the freeway where too short for proper merging. Defective road design can also include the failure to include proper guard rails, use proper pavement, or make a distinct shoulder area for cars to pull over on in case of emergency.

  • Defective Construction: This includes the actual construction of the roads. Dangerous roads can be caused by construction crews failing to follow the plans properly, using subpar material, or simply putting out inferior work that later endangers drivers.

  • Defective Maintenance: The building of the road is one thing; however the maintenance of it is just as important. Roads should be properly maintained to take care of any emerging potholes, to ensure that guardrails are functioning, that markers are not eroding, and that signs are not removed.

Protecting the Victims of Car Accidents

While Michigan does not have the most dangerous roads in the United States, it is not without its hazardous portions of road. Per 2008 Michigan State Police data, out of the top 10 wreck zones in the state, three of them are in Wayne County. They include the following:

  • Ford Road: The stretch between Lilley and Ikea Drive and the stretch between Haggerty and the South I-275 ramp account for the first and second most dangerous roads in the state of Michigan. In 2008, more than 160 car accident occurred on those two sections.

  • Haggerty Road: The stretch between 6 Mile Road and Fox Drive is the tenth most dangerous wreck zone in Michigan, with nearly 50 accidents occurring there in 2008.
